Accelerate collaboration with ASEAN 

The WHCF delegation, led by Executive Committee Chairman Hong Yun-Chul, visited Vietnam from March 31st (Sunday) to April 3rd (Wednesday) to invite Vietnam's Minister of Health and key city mayors to participating in the 2024 WHCF. He also secured Vietnam's active support for entry into the Vietnamese healthcare sector, including Smart Healthcare initiatives.


The WHCF delegation held meetings with Viet Tri City and delivered forum invitations. They also met with Deputy Director Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh from the Department of Foreign Affairs of Hanoi People’s Committee to deliver forum invitations and discussed attendance details.


Deputy Foreign Minister Choi Youngsam, the South Korean Ambassador to Vietnam, proposed active cooperation in the Smart Health sector as an embassy cooperation project and promised to actively propose the participation of Vietnamese officials in the forum. He also promised to support the attendance of city mayors at the forum.

Efforts and movements to strengthen cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which is rapidly emerging as an important actor in the era of globalization and a multipolar international order, and the World Health Cities Forum (WHCF) are acceler-ating. On March 5, WHCF Chief Executive Committee Chairman Yun-Chul HONG and Executive Committee Member CHO June Hyuck met with ambassadors and key officials from 10 ASEAN countries to discuss inviting ministers and mayors of major cities and jointly planning programs. "We hope that the Forum in November will not only be a one-time event, but also a platform for future exchanges, cooperation, and joint action between Korea, ASEAN, and global cities," said HONG Yun-Chul, Executive Committee member, and formally requested health ministers and mayors of major cities to attend the forum. The ambassadors of ASEAN countries responded positively and agreed to continue close communication in the future.

WHCF 2024 luncheon meeting with ASEAN Ambassadors to Korea

Prior to this, Chairman Yun-Chul HONG and his delegation visited Laos, the 2024 ASEAN Chair, in January, and Indonesia on February 28, managing a busy schedule including meetings related to forum invitations.


On February 28, travel to Jakarta, Indonesia was arranged to meet with Presidential Advisor Gandi Sulistiyanto to discuss President Joko Widodo's official invitation and explore opportunities for collaborative efforts regarding the forum. During the meeting, Presidential Advisor Gandi expressed his willingness to actively promote and convince President Joko Widodo and mayors of major cities to attend the Forum.


The delegation also met with the Director General of Environmental Health at the Indonesian Ministry of Health to discuss the planning of the forum sessions.

On January 18, he visited Lao PDR and met with H.E. Bounfeng PHOUMMALAYSITH, Minister of Health, H.E. Thongphane SAVANPHET, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mdm. Thoummaly VONGPHACHANH, Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Social and Cultural Affairs of the National Assembly, and others. During the meeting, Mr. Yun-chul HONG requested for Lao PDR's active participation and support in the forum as the ASEAN Chair in 2024. H.E. Bounfeng PHOUMMALAYSITH, Minister of Health, and H.E. Thongphane SAVANPHET, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, pledged to adopt 'Smart Health' as the agenda of the 2024 ASEAN Chairmanship and actively participate in the forum scheduled for November to deepen discussions and cooperation.

The World Health City Forum, which is scheduled to be held in November 2024 under the theme "Urbanization and Global Health: How to Build Smart and Healthy Cities?", will continue to expand exchanges and cooperation with ASEAN, one of the regions with the most active new urbanization along with the Middle East.
