Keynote Speech
Towards Smart Health City as Sustainable Development Strategy
[DAY3] 22 Nov, 09:00 - 10:00 (Grand Ballroom A+B)
The fourth keynote address at the 2023 World Health Cities Forum (WHCF) was delivered by Colin Janssen, Director of the Marine Biology Research Institute at Ghent University in Belgium, who is a world-renowned expert on the marine environment and climate action. In his speech, "Towards Smart Health City as Sustainable Development Strategy," he said that the ocean and human health are interconnected, and that the ecosystems and health of the ocean also play an important role in cities. He argued that healthy ocean and coastal environments are created by marine biomolecules, which in turn affect the air we breathe. This "proximity to the ocean" can provide us with health benefits, he said, emphasizing that we should strive to link urban health to ocean health and consider the ocean when developing sustainable healthy cities.
