Strategies To Tackle Health Inequalities At The Community Level: Best Practices

A discussion session was held to share approaches and best practices for addressing health inequalities at the community level. Dr. Hai Rim SHIN, former expert at the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office, moderated the session, which featured case presentations by Dr. Hopyeong Hwang, Director of Chronic Disease Control in the KDCA; Naoki KONDO, Professor and Chair, Department of Social Epidemiology, Graduate School of Medicine and School of Public Health at Kyoto University; Professor S.V. Subramanian of Harvard School of Public Health; Professor Cho Soo-jin, Catholic University of Korea; and Professor Kim Kwang-ki, Ewha Womans University. The panel was moderated by Professor Young-Sung Lee from Chungbuk National University and Akeem Ali, Director of the WHO Regional Center for Environmental Health in the Western Pacific.


 Case studies from small-scale communities in Korea, as well as examples from Japan and India, were presented. Participants discussed and empathized with the necessity of government health promotion policies, data-driven community interventions, and using business models to promote community activities in addressing disparities in health at the local level.
